Coming
in from the cold
1/6/08 - STATEN
ISLAND ADVANCE -- Back in the good old days -- which, it
turns out, weren't always so good -- when a cold snap like
last week's would hit Staten Island, track coach Bill Welsh
would bundle his New Dorp High School runners and jumpers,
including the high-jump prodigy Bill Jankunis, into sweats,
hats, scarves and gloves. Then he'd take them out for a few
tentative, don't-tweak-the-hammies turns around the track. MORE>

PARKS’ SECOND LISTENING SESSION MARKS
IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS
TOWARD INDOOR TRACK
10/4/07 - The second
information exchange between the Dept. of Parks and the
Staten Island community was held on Thursday Sept. 27th
at the Greenbelt Recreation Center. The purpose of the
meeting as outlined by Tom Paulo, Commissioner of Staten
Island Parks was meant to provide insight into all areas of
design of the park, wetlands, and the field-house structure
while simultaneously addressing the interests of the
community.
There were over 200 people in
attendance – including SITRAC members, residents of the
area, Community Board 2, representatives from offices of
elected officials, Fossella, Oddo, Cusick, and McMahon. All
support the construction of a State-of-the-Art Indoor Track.
The architectural firm of
Sage and Coombe presented preliminary designs on the actual
"fieldhouse" and the grounds of the proposed
110-acre Ocean Breeze Park. Mike Brown of the Dept. of Parks
Capital Projects was also involved. He has designed many of
Staten Island’s most beautiful projects, including the
fishing pier and sites on the grounds of snug harbor.
The "pre conceptual
plans" were very impressive. A six lane hydraulic track
in a 75’ tall and 80.000 sq. foot building set above the
ground overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was proposed. A
200-space parking lot underneath was proposed. The grounds
will be designed with greenness in mind and will highlight
the areas ecosystems and natural terrain.
SITRAC was present at the
meeting and will continue offering input through the Dept.
of Parks on the design of this world class track & field
facility.
TRAC president John Tobin
stated, "We are impressed with the openness of this
firm to accept suggestions from our organization. We will
continue to work with them to see this project through"
Sage and Coombe have now
returned to the drawing board to finalize a lot of work
based on the suggestions of the community. The final plans
will be presented for additional feedback at the third
community meeting in December of 2007.
Staten Island Dept. of Parks
Commissioner Tom Paolo stated that he expects ground
breaking in the spring of 2009.
