Spotlight
on the St. Joseph Sea Team
by Angela Liu
February 28, 2008 - Some people are born with a natural hunger for competition; others
have a love for the sport. Whichever the case may be, the
girls track team of St. Joseph by the`Sea has both if not more.
They show dedication and commitment but still know how to have fun.
At the close of the 2007-2008 indoor season the girls had been
through a lot. From the upsets of not competing at maximum
potential to the highs of achieving personal bests, the girls became
closer as a`team. The young prospective team is still
learning to deal with the disappointment and setbacks of injuries,
but there is much hope for all of them in the future. After
all, what is an injury, but a reason to try harder, after recovery
of course.
Some highlights of the 2007-2008 season include the Island's fastest
hurdler, a promising freshman thrower, and impressive relay teams,
whose times can only go lower from here. Amanda Santoro closed
the season with an Island and Sectional titles with
a personal best of 9.3 seconds in the 55m hurdles. Nikki
Frangella, only a freshman, blew the competition away at the CHSAA
girl's Sectionals. With a three foot lead over the second
place throw, this is sure to be only the first of many more Varsity
titles. Inclusive, from the 800m relay to the 3200m relay,
girls from all four years are still working on great improvements to
reach their potential.
Someone once said you're all talented and capable of doing great
things; you have to decide how bad you want it. Perseverance
is a great start but actions speak louder than words. As we
enter the 2008 outdoor season the Lady Vikings seem to want it more
than ever. They appear to be stepping out of shallow waters.
They're ready to compete at high tide.
