April 11, 2008 - There
was plenty of action this past weekend, with Island collegians
competing in all corners of the country.
Lionel Williams the extraordinary
talent from Penn State (St. Peter’s) continued his fine running.
The freshman star blazed another quick 800, this time a 1:51.17,
which gave him fifth at the Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational in
Eugene.
Also competing on the west coast was
Matt Frawley of Kentucky (Msgr. Farrell), who ran at the Stanford
Invitational. Frawley turned in a 1:59.42-800, followed by a 4:04.04
for 1,500 meters.
Down South, Kerry Salzano of Stony
Brook (MSIT) ran second in the 10,000 at the Duke Invitational,
running 37:11.81.
Further south, Dan Lewis of Villanova
(Farrell) was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, running
9:26.19.
At the Colonial Relays in
Williamsburg, Matt Jimenez of Georgetown (Farrell) threw the shot
45-11.75.
Closer to home, Kyle Duggan of the
University of Connecticut (Farrell) was second in the pole vault
(15-0) at the U Conn Alumni Invitational.
Several Islanders competed at the Sam
Howell Invitational at Princeton. Jeff Carbonella of the host school
(Farrell) was second in the 800 (1:53.26), while his former
teammate, Jeff Carstensen of Rhode Island was fifth in the pole
vault (15-3). Nandi Dozier-Lewis of Binghamton (St. Peter’s)
competed in the horizontal jumps. She leaped 15-4 in the long jump,
and 34-7.5 in the triple jump. Vito Cannavo of Harvard (Farrell) ran
1:58.74 for the 800.
There was big action at the annual
Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet, where Kim Scotto of Lehigh (MSIT) ran
third in the 800 (2:19.29). No one was busier this weekend than Sean
McAuley of Lafayette (Farrell) , who scored in the four throwing
events.
Strictly a shot-discus man in high
school, he won the discus (149-2), placed second in the hammer throw
(153-9), was fourth in the javelin (117-2), and fifth in the shot
put (42-4.75).
