April 3, 2008 - The big
story of last week was Mother Nature, who reminded everyone that
winter is not quite over. Cold, damp, and windy weather made for
slow times and seemingly sub-par performances.
Some rose above the obstacles imposed
by Mother Nature to turn in creditable performances.
Alysen Kuck of Washington and Lee
competes on the Division III level, but she managed a pair of wins
against D-I competition at the Liberty Invitational in Virginia. The
former St. Joseph by-the-Sea star cleared 5-0.25 to take the high
jump, and won the javelin with a 115-1 toss.
Penn's Jesse Carln (Sea) won the 800
at the Maryland Invitational (2:11.81), and ran second in the 400
(56.76). Kerry Salzano of Stony Brook (MSIT) was second in the 5,000
at the Southern Connecticut State Invitational (17:53.96), and Brian
Carstensen of Rhode Island (Farrell) was second in the pole vault
(15-7) at the same meet.
Sean McAuley of Lafayette (Farrell)
was second in the hammer (152-7) at the Lafayette 5-way meet, and
also threw the discus 144-7 for 7th.
Kim Scotto of Lehigh (MSIT) competed
in the Invitational 800 at the Wintrhop (N.C.) Invitational, and was
seventh in 2:23.70.
Jeff Brannigan of American University
(Curtis) ran 4:01.94 for 1,500 meters, while Vito Cannavo of Harvard
(Farrell) ran 4:01.63 at the Rice Invitational in Texas.
Matt Jimenez of Georgetown (Farrell)
threw 44-6.25 at the Raleigh Relays, while Brian Duggan of Rutgers
(Farrell), battling a painful shoulder injury, turned to the long
jump, where he leaped 18'09.25 at the Monmouth Season Opener.
A number of other athletes competed
at the Monmouth meet. Sean Lynch of St. Francis (St. Peter's) was
fourth in the 800 (2:00.90), and ran the 1,500 in 4:21.46. Vin
Gangemi, also of St. Francis (St. Peter's) ran 52.70 in the 400;
Peter Liota, also St. Francis (Farrell) ran 2:03.65 for 800 and
24.64 for the 200. Corinna Steed of St. Francis (St. Peter's), ran
1:11.79 for the 400, while Billy Dowd of Monmouth (St. Peter's) ran
16:34.08 in the 5,000.
